Lights go on at Huish Sixth
As the construction works to the Huish Sixth building near completion, the contractor’s temporary lighting is being removed and the new light fittings are being turned on for the first time. The pipework is being filled with water so that the sinks and toilets will function properly. Glazed balustrades have been fitted to the balconies in place of the contractor’s safety barriers, and decorations are continuing throughout the building. The character of the building is emerging, as more of the internal finishes are revealed.
The good weather we have been enjoying has also helped the progress being made with the external works. Trees have been planted and the outdoor furniture is being installed. Areas which will be grassed around Science have been seeded. Some rain would benefit all the new planting - so fingers crossed we get some soon. The coloured tarmac is being laid to the rear of the upper block and the new paving slabs are being laid around the entrance.
The scaffold has been removed from around the bridge link revealing the cedar boarded soffits at low and high level. The unpainted areas where the scaffold obscured the steelwork will quickly be touched up with grey paint. You can also see that the glazed balustrade has been installed, although it will keep its protective covering until the work on the soffit at the upper level is complete.
In this picture of the upper level of the bridge link you can see how the cedar soffit is made, and how the floor deck is being constructed. The cedar boards for the soffit are individually screw-fixed to the curved steel framework. On the floor, the stacks of cut timber you can see are noggins which will be fixed between the joists to strengthen the frame, and then the decking will be laid with non-slip resin inserts.
What’s happening next? Over the coming weeks you will see:
• Cafe kitchen fitted
• External works completed
• The bridge link completed
• The dining room extension completed
