Dropping the scaffold

The scaffolding is gradually being dropped from the first floor of the upper sixth form block as the cedar cladding is completed. At external ground floor level you will see that the external render system has now commenced. The external wall is firstly enveloped with insulation boards and then the render applied.

If you look closely you will see that the fixing rods have been inserted through the insulation back to the structure to support the lettering for the building’s name. Inside the upper block, the internal partitions are nearing completion and the floor screeding can therefore commence. The structural concrete first floor is overlaid with insulation to improve acoustics and then screed is pumped into each room and levelled to finished floor level. The screed is pumped from delivery lorries outside the building through flexible pipes to each room.

In areas that have under floor heating, the pipe work is carefully laid and clipped to the insulation with the screed poured on top. The under floor heating pipes will gradually warm up the screed providing you with a comfortable environment in circulation spaces without the need for radiators. The works to the lower block follow on from the upper block. Internal partitions are still being erected and when the screeding is complete in the upper block they will move on to the lower block.

As the screeds are completed in the science block and decorations commence, the contractor is now concentrating on completing the external works around the science extension. The second fix mechanical and electrical works are being finalised inside to allow the laboratory furniture to be fitted. Some of the fixed island pods are already in place.

What’s happening next? Over the next few weeks you will see:

• Rendering progressing to the upper block
• Rendering commencing to the lower block
• Breaking through to the existing library
• External works to science
