Our proposal for a new visitor centre at Avalon Marshes, Somerset has been selected from a strong field in a design competition conducted by Natural England. Working with Mark Lovell Design Engineers, the scheme uses a series of round, timber-framed buildings that are linked together and rest lightly on the peat of the Somerset Levels, like a flotilla of coracles. The repeated form of the conical thatched roofs gives the centre a distinct, unified presence: this is a building that is confident of its place in the landscape. More
